Lusismos no japonês



If my history is correct, the Portuguese were the first Europeans in Japan, so Japanese’s first borrow words come from the Portuguese language.

A majority of the words here (there’s more, I didn’t list all of them) are in katakana. Katakana is, most of the time, used to put foreign words into the Japanese language.

*See note: Tempura is the fried dish in Japan, but in Portuguese, tempero means “seasoning.”
